Six informal settlements in Kisumu are slated for a significant transformation following the allocation of Sh1.3 billion in grants from the World Bank and the French Development Agency (AFD) to the county.
The funding, directed through the second phase of the Kenya Informal Settlements Improvement Project (KISIP 2), aims to upgrade road networks, improve access to clean piped water, implement drainage systems, install high mast flood lights, and connect the areas to the sewerage system.
Kisumu County’s KISIP 2 Coordinator, Tom Mboya, disclosed plans to upgrade 14 roads to bitumen standards in Bandani, Manyatta A, Manyatta B, Kibuye, and Muhoroni, facilitating better connectivity within the informal settlements.
Works include drainage systems, street lighting, and high mast flood lights in Migosi and Nyawita to enhance security and support local businesses.
Construction in Lot 1, covering Bandani, Manyatta A, Manyatta B, Migosi, and Nyawita, commenced on January 18, 2024, with completion expected by January 18, 2025. Lot 2, encompassing Muhoroni and Kibuye, faces delays due to legislative issues but is anticipated to begin soon.
The project aims to transform the landscape of the informal settlements, improve health outcomes with better water access, enhance security, and increase property values. Over 600 youths are expected to secure casual jobs, reducing crime rates.
The project involves close collaboration with Settlement Executive Committees (SEC) to address community needs. Supervision by various government bodies, consulting engineers, and the World Bank ensures quality delivery.
Community involvement in design and grievance resolution through SECs is integral to the project. Residents express optimism about improved access, security, and economic opportunities brought by the developments.
The ongoing works, such as road construction and installation of security lights, are seen as crucial milestones in improving connectivity, security, and economic prospects for the residents of Kisumu’s informal settlements.
