As the second term approaches with the reopening of schools next week, Mrs. Loice Murei, the county director of TSC in Elgeyo Marakwet, urges all teachers to seize the opportunity presented by the current rainy season and designate the week for planting trees.
Emphasizing the inclusion of tree planting in their performance contracts, Mrs. Murei stresses the importance of educating students about the significance of tree planting and environmental stewardship.
During a tree planting event at Singore Girls’ High School, where 200 trees were planted by staff, Mrs. Murei announced plans to plant an additional 200 trees at Sergoit Secondary School.
In alignment with the national initiative to plant 15 billion trees, Mrs. Murei’s office will distribute 900 seedlings to staff, encouraging each individual to plant 30 trees at their respective homes.
Furthermore, the initiative includes distributing 50 fruit tree seedlings to staff members, offering an opportunity for additional income generation while promoting environmental conservation.
Linet Besi, the principal of Singore Girls, extends an invitation to collaborate on tree planting efforts, citing the school’s previous success of planting 2,500 trees last year and available land for further planting.
Addressing concerns about school infrastructure, Mrs. Murei assures readiness for school reopening, noting minimal impact from the recent rains on school facilities. Efforts are underway, in collaboration with local authorities and organizations, to address any infrastructure challenges, such as collapsed toilets, ensuring a conducive learning environment for students.
