Employment is the main thing that every graduate and their families fancy after many years of schooling, spending money on school fees and even the hardships their parents have to endure to get the whole process of studying possible from kindergarten level to university level. Especially in Uganda you have to do the impossible for you get yourself a job no matter the number of degrees you have. My name is Agnes Wanjiku 11 years ago I graduated with a first-class honor in accounting from the University of Kampala. After the graduation ceremony I headed home and celebrated with my family and friends knowing soon I would get a job in a reputable banking company and redeem my family from poverty by awarding my parents with a lavish lifestyle.
Few weeks later I had to travel from Kirinyaga back to Kampala and see if I would get a job since i considered Kampala to be a city where all the dreams live. I knew I had all it takes and requires to secure myself a job. Working with banks like Stanbic and Absa was my childhood dream little did I know that it was hard to even secure a job at a local banking agent with poor salaries. I walked through a thousand doors and institutions failing in each of my interviews. I found it hard to survive in the city without a source of income. I opted to look for casual jobs which i would rarely get to the extent that I became homeless.
Life hit me to the extent of almost committing suicide. My life was a mess sometimes I would look at my certificates and feel like I had wasted my time and my parents’ money in terms of studying. Joyce a good friend of mine divided to host me at her place where she suggested that we will be splitting the rent in half’s and everyone was required to pay a small amount of 2500 ksh which to me was a lot of money since I didn’t have anywhere to earn from. She told me that if I would find it hard to raise my portion of the rent, she would have to throw me out to the streets. I decided to try the trend that many other beauties were using to survive in the city, dating “wababa”.
I would go to night clubs and seduce men for money, sometimes I would even offer myself in exchange for money. Sometimes I would even stay the night and end up returning home with nothing. I fell into depression; I lost weight and I was nearly losing my mind too. I tried sending money to online pastors who promised to pray for me to get a job but their prayers bore no fruits. One Monday morning I was roaming through the streets of Rongai in Nakuru,I found my high school desk mate John Mbugua who was driving in his luxurious car .
He stopped gave me a ride and we had a chat in his car.
