There is a stark contrast between petty offenders and scammers who carefully plan their treacherous schemes so well you can’t fault yourself for falling for their trap. My name is Brian Rubia and this happened to me in Kajiado, where I worked at a Butchery. A decently dressed man showed up to my work station at around 10 am and identified himself as Kelvin and asked if I had 100 pieces of fresh chicken ready for frying, that he was expecting guests later that day and wanted them delivered to a nearby hotel, BeesPark known for having impeccable services and conference facilities. I knew where BeesPark was, but had like 18 chicken in the refrigerator. I asked him if he could wait so that I contact my boss to deliver more chickens. He agreed and left briefly.
He came back like half an hour later and I informed him that my boss had managed to deliver 62 more, totaling to 80. He agreed to buy them and asked I help him carry them to the hotel and that he had the money there. We got there and the receptionist welcomed him back and I knew that he must have indeed made arrangements with them. She knew him and Kelvin even asked her if there was enough room to accommodate at least 150 guests. Turns out, he had come earlier to establish rapport and create familiarity with the receptionist. He hadn’t booked a room yet nor had he paid for anything. He went with the chickens upstairs and said he was handing them over to his associate. Worse, he had already surveyed the building more than twice and already been upstairs. He knew there was another flight of stairs that emerged from a college downstairs.
And just like that, he used this other route out of the hotel, boarded a bodaboda with my 80 chickens and vanished!! I waited with the receptionist for more than half an hour, nothing. I got worried and asked the receptionist if he was a guest at the hotel and that’s when she told me that she had only seen him that morning and that Kelvin had inquired about the availability of accommodation, nothing else. One of the security guards informed us that he saw him with a sack boarding a bodaboda. I almost fainted!! I knew I had been conned. What was I to tell my boss?? That his 80 pieces of chicken worth around Kshs. 450 each have been stolen right under my nose?? He wouldn’t understand.
I called my boss anyway and after pleading with him, he contacted a fellow Butchery owner to ask if he has ever heard of such a scam. To his surprise and disbelief, he was informed that similar cases have been reported to Nyotu Police and that the manner of the execution is the same. It was a well-planned scam and the culprit had so far been at large. That’s when my boss Samuel Maina acted swiftly to end his scheme once and for all. He contacted a native doctor called Dr. Mugwenu and explained the urgency of the situation and what had just transpired. Using his powerful spells and traditional herbal preparations, he is known for catching thieves, exposing criminals and recovering stolen items.
A huge swarm of bees escorted Kelvin back to the Butchery! He still had all the chickens on his back and looked confused and delirious. I was so overjoyed, having escaped having to pay Kshs. 36,000. Despite his numerous apologies, he was apprehended and escorted to Nyotu Police station for further questioning. Thanks to Dr. Mugwenu, he faced music and danced to tunes unfamiliar to his eardrums.
