Kenya emerged victorious in securing the bid to host the 2024 Transform Africa Summit (TAS), convened by the Smart Africa Alliance, a Pan-African agency dedicated to ICTs. The announcement of Kenya’s successful bid was disclosed yesterday evening by Doreen Bogdan-Martin, the Secretary General of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) in Barcelona, Spain, during the GSMA Mobile World Congress (MWC-24).
Eliud Owalo, the Cabinet Secretary for Information, Communications, and the Digital Economy, graciously accepted the win, considering it a testament to Kenya’s unmatched leadership in the ICT domain. Owalo expressed gratitude for the confidence bestowed upon Kenya by the Smart Africa Alliance, highlighting the country’s commitment to advancing ICTs for socio-economic development in the region.
Kenya humbly accepts the honor and is now diligently preparing to deliver a world-class event in August of this year. Acknowledging the efforts of the Local Organizing Committee (LOC) led by Edward Kisiang’ani, the Principal Secretary for Broadcasting and Telecommunications, and the Communications Authority of Kenya (CA), Owalo praised their dedication in securing the bid.
Mary Mungai, the CA Board Chairperson, emphasized that hosting the event provides a platform for shaping discussions on sustainable digital economies in Africa. This marks the first time Kenya will host the event in the ten-year history of the Smart Africa Alliance, offering the CA an opportunity to engage with regional peers and address emerging challenges in the ICT landscape.
David Mugonyi, the CA Director General, highlighted the significance of hosting peers from the region to share experiences and best practices, fostering collaboration towards leveraging ICTs for economic development.
The Transform Africa Summit, an annual gathering by the Smart Africa Alliance, serves as the continent’s premier forum for global and regional leaders from government, business, and international organizations to collaborate on Africa’s digital transformation. With over 5,000 delegates expected to attend, the TAS aims to shape the future of Africa’s digital landscape.
