Finally, here is our first look at Samsung’s new 10th generation flagships, the most anticipated phone of 2019 from Samsung so far and that turns out it’s actually three phones. There is the Samsung Galaxy S10, Samsung Galaxy S10 plus and the Galaxy S10E. Three new phones each of them familiar in many ways as a Samsung phone but each of them also has their differences.
In this review we are going to focus on the two main flagship phones. The Galaxy S10 and the Galaxy S10 Plus. Right off the bat they do look pretty good. I mean I never thought Samsung phones were ugly at all, but these look quite nice. We kind of saw this coming from the renders.
Part A: The new stuff for the Galaxy S10.
There are three main improvements and a lot of small ones and the main ones are:
- The Display,
- The Fingerprint Sensor and
- The Cameras.
#1. The Display: Samsung’s new display is simple. It’s a 6.1-inch display for S10 and 6.4-inch display for the S10 Plus and they continue Samsung’s tradition of having the best display in any phone for a couple of years running now and it continues to get even better.
You have a 90 plus percent screen to body ratio, a super-high resolution with a 19 by 9 tall aspect ratio. The screen is also HDR 10+ certified. Samsung decided to change the name a little bit. They are calling it the next level infinity display. The screen goes right up to the very edges and you have of course the camera cutout right there in the top right corner as we have seen it all in the leaks.
It’s a precise laser cut hole in the AMOLED panel for just the camera to come through and nothing else. It’s a single 10-megapixel camera for the Galaxy S10 plus an additional depth sensor next to it for the dual cutout in the S10 Plus. Sorry selfie lovers, no ultra-wide selfie camera sadly.
Seeing this cut out in person instead of just in a leak or a render, it doesn’t really shock me anymore. We have seen this design start to come up. We saw this implementation in honor phone, but it was on the left-hand side. For Samsung it’s on the right, it seems like Samsung cutout is just a little bit smaller than the cutout on honor and it’s not too distracting. It pushes the battery and the signal indicators over from the right edge.
Samsung has also cleverly included a bunch of wallpapers that’s slightly dark in the top right-hand corner to make the hole punch less jarring. They also draw this fancy animation around the cut out when you switch to the front facing camera. I guess they are kind of embracing it. Samsung can now say they have technically never done a notch I guess.
#2. The Fingerprint Sensor: Samsung Galaxy S10 has officially moved to the ultrasonic under the glass fingerprint reader which is really great. The word “Ultrasonic” is not just a name they are just making up. That actually means something as far as the technologies use for you and I. Just make this easier for you to understand, we’ve had under the glass fingerprint sensors in phones before namely in phones like the 1+ 6T but they have mostly been optical fingerprint sensors shining a light on your finger to read your fingerprint. These ultrasonic ones don’t use that. They have a couple of advantages as shown below:
- They are firster.
- They don’t need to shine up super bright light on your finger to read it. This means it will be way less annoying in dim light or at night.
- It can read the fingerprints before waking up the display at all. This is a pretty nice feature we are really happy about and we are all looking forward to using.
